Tostones

By Hannah2 min read
Tostones
Tostones are beloved crispy bites enjoyed throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, made from twice-fried unripe plantains. Their name comes from the Spanish *tostar*, meaning “to toast,” a fitting description of their golden, crunchy texture. These savory plantain rounds are a staple in countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic, though they go by different names depending on the region. In Cuba, they’re known as *tachinos* or *chatinos*, while in Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia, they take the name *patacones*. In Haiti, a variation called *bannann peze* is often paired with fried pork (*griot*) and spicy *pikliz* slaw, showcasing their versatility across cultures. The process of making tostones is simple yet transformative. The plantains are sliced into thick rounds and fried once until softened, then flattened before being fried again to achieve their signature crispiness. This method is also used for *tostones de pana*, a Puerto Rican version made with unripe breadfruit instead of plantains. Puerto Rico also offers a creative twist with *tostones rellenos*, where the fried plantains are molded into small cups and filled with meats, seafood, or vegetables, making for a delicious and hearty appetizer. Tostones are commonly enjoyed much like French fries or potato chips, often served with a variety of dips and accompaniments. Garlic mojo sauce, *ají*, and black bean dip are popular choices in Costa Rica, while the Dominican Republic favors a simple sprinkle of salt and fresh lime juice. In Colombia, they might be topped with *hogao* sauce or shredded beef, while in Nicaragua, they’re often paired with fried cheese and refried beans. Whether eaten as a snack, side dish, or topped with bold flavors, tostones remain a cherished and adaptable part of Latin American cuisine, found in home kitchens and grocery stores alike.
